Recently, I wrote to my State Senator & Representative urging they consider introducing and supporting legislation overturning Government Code 13923, establishing the California State Employees Charitable Campaign. Earlier today, I sent off a similar formal complaint to the California Fair Political Practices commission regarding the exploitation of the program by Governor Schwarzenegger as a vehicle for personal advertising and political campaigning. That the CSECC would declare someone guilty of, at least, extreme sexual harassment (and, perhaps, felony sexual battery as well as fundraising and campaigning fraud via the "Protocol Foundation") as the "honorary chairman" indicates how little they care about the State employees they claim to serve and represent. Believe me, no one asked us how we feel about this dangerous fool being "honored" by the campaign.

The exploitation of the Campaign by Schwarzenegger, in a grotesque manner not seen in any other State, is not the only reason the CSECC deserves to die, however. The Campaign wastes well over $2.5 million a year in administrative costs, and receives only a 1-point "poor" rating from Charity Navigator and other similar philanthropic watchdog groups.

The only reason to ever have the Campaign in the first place was that it offered the possibility of convenient payroll deductions for State workers. That small advantage has now evaporated. When I cancelled all my contributions with the CSECC in protest of Schwarzenegger's exploitation of the program, I had no trouble at all immediately establishing the same monthly deductions directly with the charities themselves. In fact, it was easier than doing so through the CSECC, and, as Charity Navigator tells us, far less costly.

The CSECC is an expensive, pointless, corrupt, dinosaur. Let's put it out of our misery, shall we? I can think of a lot of charities that can do far better things with that $2.5 million.
